What It Takes To Be A Leader

Last week, I posted a quote on Twitter that truly spoke to me. I believe quotes are a great motivational tool to help us get to where we want to go. I know personally, quotes have the power to transform an ordinary situation into an extraordinary one. We don’t realize the influence quotes withhold, quotes can make us look at a situation in a whole new light.

I recently read an article on LinkedIn, titled: 7 Simple Rules to Bring a Leader, No Matter What Your Experience. The article spoke eloquently of not only my core beliefs on leadership, but as to what it takes to be a great leader. Leadership isn’t something you are given, it is learned. No matter where you’ve been, you always have the ability to take the reins and become someone of inspiration. What it takes to be a leader is simple, yet often unattainable to withhold. Leadership takes; passion, drive, focus and determination.

Just as Coach Griffen from the Washington Redskins took his struggling team and turned them into champions, we all have the power to transform a downward situation and turn it into something people will talk about for centuries to come.

Leadership also takes a commitment to change. Whether you are relating that to; business, relationships, a sports team, or a personal goal, attitude is everything! If you repeatedly tell yourself, “I can’t do this”, or “This will never happen for me”, chances are it wont. How you look at a particular situation can mean all the difference in whether you sink or swim.

True leaders inspire everyone to do better and try harder. You can’t run a team or a company successfully when only half of your people are “In the game”. As quoted in the article: “Coach Griffen’s commitment to the franchise, his belief, his work ethic and his team spirit were contagious. He became a natural leader and earned the respect of those around him.” It doesn’t take a lot of doing; it takes the desire and passion to plow ahead.

Leaders know where they’d like to go, but understand that they can’t get there without their team, without giving those they lead the tools to make something happen.
